Rescuers shepherd dolphins to safety in Wellfleet - Wicked Local

A mass stranding of common dolphins was avoided on Thursday evening when wildlife rescuers with the International Fund for Animal Welfare managed to herd more than 50 of the animals out of Wellfleet Harbor before low tide.

The IFAW Marine Mammal Rescue and Research team used boats with acoustic devices called pingers to shepherd the dolphins to deeper water. The team remains in Wellfleet where it continues to survey the coastline for any additional live or dead dolphins.

Rescuers also responded to dolphin strandings in Barnstable yesterday, where three were found dead and two live dolphins were recovered and released off Town Neck Beach in Sandwich.

IFAW is reporting that the total number of dolphins that have stranded so far on the Cape this year is now 160. Of those animals, 103 were found dead. Of the 57 that were found alive, 40 were released back into the wild successfully.

The rescue team has been working steadily for nearly four weeks to respond to the unprecedented flurry of common dolphin strandings, which began on Jan. 12.
